Chapter 5: Questioners

Nynaeve and Egwene question Joiya and Amico, two of the Black Ajah captured during the battle. Each has a different story to tell about Liandrin’s plans.

Of Liandrin’s thirteen Black Ajah, only two were captured during the battle for the Stone of Tear — Amico Nagoyin and Joiya Byir. It seems Moiraine was questioning the Darkfriends when an Aiel came and dragged her off to help Rand. Elayne went along with Moiraine, leaving Egwene and Nynaeve to demonstrate the skill they possess in the art of interrogation — which is to say, none at all.

Amico is a meek little thing now that she can’t touch the True Source anymore. The book says she was stilled during her capture, but it doesn’t go into detail about how it happened. Did Egwene accidentally still her instead of merely shielding her? Was Nynaeve so angry when she punched Amico that she subconsciously rage-stilled her? Either way, it sounds like Amico got stilled by accident — how embarrassing!

According to Amico, Liandrin plans to find a dangerous artifact in Tanchico — something that will bind Rand to the Shadow, and not even his ability to channel will be able to save him.

Joiya is considerably more smug, secure in the knowledge that the True Source is just one slip-up away from her touch. Hey Nynaeve, Egwene, with Moiraine out of the room, you ladies do realize this is the perfect opportunity for another “accidental stilling” to happen, right? Alas, instead they listen to the story Joiya has to tell. She says Liandrin is traveling to Saldaea to liberate Mazrim Taim (a false Dragon who was recently captured) and manipulate him into sowing destruction in Rand’s name.

As I said, no interrogation skill whatsoever. Ladies, these Darkfriends aren’t scared of you. They don’t respect you. They’re playing you like a fiddle. Ah, well, I guess I should be happy you at least managed to not fuck up the shielding weave and set them loose. And so should you, because here comes Moiraine, and she doesn’t look happy.
