Let's Read Wheel of Time

This is probably a mistake…

Chapter 30: Beyond the Oak

Outside the inn, Perrin and Faile’s group runs into Cenn Buie, who hopefully won’t alert the Whitecloaks to their presence. Mistress al’Vere leads them to a hiding place where they encounter two Warders.

Rumor has it that the UK publisher for The Shadow Rising insisted on slapping a sticker on the front that warned passersby to exercise caution. Don’t stand directly or obliquely beneath this book, it said, so as to avoid the risk of head trauma that would occur if this volume’s full heft were to impact your skull.

Readers may be wondering what any of this has to do with the present chapter. Shouldn’t I be writing about that instead? Yes! But this chapter exemplifies why The Shadow Rising is unnecessarily long: it is packed to the brim with wispy clouds of pure white fluff. Sadly, the TL;DR already covered everything that happened in the chapter. What should have taken one page to convey somehow got padded out to ten pages of nothing happening for the reader to wade through.

Let’s just move the fuck on and see who these Warders belong to, shall we?
