Chapter 10: The Stone Stands

Rand defends the Stone of Tear against an army of Fades and Trollocs.

Rand nearly trips over the dead Aiel and Gray Men outside his door. Fades and Trollocs have invaded the Stone of Tear. Defenders and Aiel struggle to hold the Stone, but they’re outnumbered. Rand kills the nearest Fade and rallies men behind him. He marches through the Stone fighting the Shadowspawn. With a sword. This is a guy who is supposedly among the most powerful channelers in history, and he’s fighting Fades and Trollocs with a sword.

Lanfear shows up again and points out that Rand is essentially trying to fight a battle with a toothpick.

RAND: But… it’s a sword made of the One Power.

LANFEAR: Lews Therin, you have Callandor — one of the most powerful sa’angreal ever created — and where is it at this moment?

RAND: Uh–

LANFEAR: Unguarded, in your chambers? Where anyone could take it?

RAND: Listen, I just remembered, I forgot to do a thing.

Rand bolts back to his room and grabs Callandor. He starts hacking away at Shadowspawn, which is like getting your hands on an assault rifle and using it to club your opponents to death. When he realizes this, he sends waves of lightning through the Stone, killing the attackers instantly.

With the battle over, Rand surveys the carnage and has a childish meltdown over the fact that death cannot be Healed. He may be one of those powerful channelers ever, but developmentally still stuck back in the Two Rivers. Rand retires for the night, promising to let Moiraine know in the morning what he plans to do next.
